Teacher

Teaching musicians what they're already great at

Since 2023 I've been an Adjunct Professor at Berklee College of Music, teaching the senior-level business class for film and game scoring undergraduates. Hundreds of students in, the lesson holds: the direct paths matter, but the bigger opportunity is often adjacent.

The business class

Berklee College of Music

My students come in aiming at the obvious goals, like scoring a AAA game or a feature film. I teach those paths, and then I show them how much wider the map is. The skills that make someone a great musician and composer are the same ones that make great producers, leaders, and collaborators across media and entertainment, and well beyond it.

Improvisation

Making strong decisions in real time, under pressure, with incomplete information.

Ensemble

Leading and following inside a team, listening first, and making everyone around you sound better.

Range

Turning musical training into producer roles and adjacent opportunities across media, entertainment, and other industries.

VR and AR design

MIT

In the fall of 2017 I co-taught MIT's VR+AR Design Workshop (2.S972), cross-listed with Berklee, on virtual and augmented reality and the quest for realism.

Where it started

The Film Scoring Network

As a Berklee student I started the Film Scoring Network, connecting more than 150 filmmakers with Berklee composers. Building bridges between creative people has been part of how I teach ever since.
